Chapter 15

Doreen was about ten minutes into her walk when Mack called.

“What kind of message is that?” he asked her, disgruntled.

“It means, I got a prank caller of some kind,” she explained.

“What do you mean, a prank caller?”

“Heavy breathing on the other end of the phone.”

“Ha. Could have been kids,” he replied cautiously.

“Could have been,” she admitted. “Could have been all kinds of things. I told him to leave me alone anyway.”

“I’m sure that’ll be effective,” Mack noted, with a hint of humor.

She glared down into the phone. “I honestly didn’t know what to say. I should have hung up immediately.”

“Next time it happens, if it happens again, do that. Other than that, like I said, stay home and stay quiet.”

“Oops,” she muttered. She wouldn’t mention that she had already been out earlier this morning to Millicent’s. Doreen frowned. He’d be mad when he heard about that from his own mother.

“Oops? What does oops mean?” he asked, his voice rising. “What do you mean, oops? There’s no room for oops here, Doreen.”

She sighed. “I’m outside, walking toward Wendy’s right now.”

“That’s not an oops,” he roared into the phone. “How is that staying at home?”

“I was getting frustrated and upset,” she explained, “so I thought I’d make a quick run to visit with Wendy. I have some more clothes to sell.”

“You’ve got more clothes to sell? How is that even possible?”

“Nan had a ton of clothing, and I wanted to keep a few of the pieces. They are really nice pieces and a really awesome vintage, but they didn’t feel the same on me anymore. I’ve changed, I guess.”

“Yeah, you definitely have,” Mack grumbled. “You used to listen when you were told to do something.”

She snorted. “In your dreams. That was when I was married.”

First came silence on the other end, and then he groaned. “How will I keep you safe if you keep wandering around town?”

“I figured it was probably better to wander around town and act as if nothing was wrong,” she stated, “than to hide away in my house, petrified to get out. I don’t want to be a prisoner in my own house.”

“No, but you do want to live, right?”

“Sure.” She sighed. “You always pull that line, and it makes me feel terrible.”

“And yet it still doesn’t make a bit of difference,” he muttered.

She smiled into the phone. “It does, … maybe not enough.”

“Not enough is no joke,” he said, with a sigh. “Let me know when you get to Wendy’s, and let me know when you get home. And, if you feel anybody walking behind you, following you, even a weird noise, you call me. You hear me?”

“Okay,” she said happily. “Glad you’ve got nothing better to do than babysit me.”

“It would have been better if you’d stayed home,” he muttered. “But instead …”

“I’ll pass through the grocery store on the way,” she shared. “Do you want me to pick up something for dinner?”

“What? Am I coming over for dinner again?” he asked, a note of humor evident.
